Body mass index and weight loss surgery

People with BMI of at least 40 are considered to be ideal for weight loss surgery. However people with BMI between 35 and 39 may be considered provided they are suffering from any health hazard caused due to obesity. These health hazards include hypertension, diabetes, depression and high cholesterol. Thus is a person is suffering from these deadly diseases he may be considered for the surgery overlooking the requirements of BMI. These standards had been set up by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and are considered as reference since 1990.

BMI is a measure of the obesity of a person and can be calculated with the help of the BMI calculator. Here are the BMI ranges for people with different weights:

Healthy Body Weight - BMI from 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight - BMI from 25.0 to 29.9
Obese - BMI from 30 to 34.9
Severely Obese - BMI from 35 to 39.9
Morbidly Obese - BMI 40 and above
